Methods for assessing local environmental impact of the installation of biorefinery

Abstract

Fossil fuels pose different challenges to humanity nowadays, the biomass agricultural raw materials thus can be a realistic alternative to them, allowing to prevent environmental problems and to produce biofuels, energy and other products. Being not so rich in natural resources, but having excellent agricultural opportunities, France is interested in the biorefinery concept, thus creating and realizing different projects. The main objective is to install the biorefinery, using local biomass in order to provide more benefits for the local population. Despite of having a lot of environmental advantages in comparison with fossil fuels, biorefinery can also have an adverse effect. The evaluation of its potential negative environmental impact is the main issue of this research based on several methods: Material Flow Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment.
