Abstract : This paper deals with cultural variation in newsgroups through the conversational analysis of French and Moroccan newsgroups (fr.soc.divers and Albarid.net). The analysis shows that the “communicative styles” and the underlying interactional norms of these newsgroups are very different. Four hypotheses can be put forward: online communicative style is a reflection of the “national” communicative ethos, netiquette is a factor of cultural standardization, the communicative style depends on the topics of the newsgroups and on the kind of community the participants constitute (e.g. a group of people who like to discuss general interest subjects or a national diaspora).
