On application of an imperfect repair model in maintenance scheduling

Résumé

The paper studies the failure dataset from a fleet of six load-haul-dump machines in a Swedish mine. The data consists of time between successive failures of each machine during a period of two years. Our paper aims to estimate the reliability characteristics of these machines along with the repair efficiency. The effect of early missing data before the beginning of the observation is also mentioned. To describe the failure and maintenance process of such dataset, imperfect repair models seem more appropriate. Two classical models (As Bad As Old and As Good As New), though simple to deal with, are not flexible enough to characterize repair efficiency. In this paper, we use the Arithmetic Reduction of Age with infinite memory (ARA ∞ ) imperfect repair model. The model allows us to quantify the effect of repair on each machine and to take into account the effect of the early missing data. Estimation results of each machine and of combined groups of machines are given by the maximum likelihood method. Finally, a maintenance policy based on the age-based preventive maintenance policy is proposed for these machines under the ARA ∞ assumption.
